Puberty

Puberty & Body Changes

Understanding your changing body is an important part of growing up. Here's what you need to know.

Common Puberty Changes

  • Breast development (usually starts between 8-13 years)
  • Growth of pubic and underarm hair
  • Body shape changes (wider hips, more body fat)
  • Start of menstrual periods (usually between 10-16 years)
  • Skin changes (may get oilier, acne is common)
  • Growth spurts (rapid increase in height)

Menstruation Basics

Your period is a normal part of growing up. Here's what to expect:

  • Periods usually last 3-7 days
  • The menstrual cycle is typically 21-35 days
  • You may experience cramps, mood changes, or breast tenderness
  • It's normal for periods to be irregular at first

When to Talk to a Doctor

Most puberty changes are normal, but see a doctor if:

  • You haven't started puberty by age 13
  • You haven't gotten your period by age 16
  • Your periods are extremely painful or heavy
  • You're worried about your development
